Seymour News - Abiding

Abiding
I’ve been studying 1 John in preparation of our upcoming Bible Quiz season. John, unlike many of Paul’s letters, orbits or repeats key ideas: Darkness vs light. Love vs hate. Obedience. Fellowship. And abiding. I’ve been studying what abide means:
Abide: To stay. Remain. Be present. Continue. Dwell. Endure.
Its the word used in the gospels when Jesus stays in a village or when he asks his disciples to remain with him while praying in the garden of Gethsemane.
John has many things to say in his letter about abiding, but 2 stand out to me:
1 - His word should dwell in us.
2 - We are to remain in Jesus.
As I’ve entered a new, busier season, I’ve been convicted about how I am spending my rest time. Am I remainingpresent with Jesus? Am I dwelling in the Word? In prayer? In worship? Or am I turning to other places or people for relief? The last instruction John writes in 1 John is to ‘keep yourselves from idols.’ If we are abiding in Jesus, we are keeping ourselves from idols.
I encourage you to read 1 John this month and highlight some of John’s keywords - this little book has been an encouragement to me this month. I've been using Dwell, an audio Bible app.
Bible Quizzing
We had our first monthly practice of the season! It was good for the team to gather and hang out. The team now knows their new chapters for the upcoming quiz season. We did CRAM—30 minutes to learn as many verses as possible in their first chapter. I currently have eight varsity kids who want to quiz next year, and I’m hoping to recruit more to have two teams at the local level.
Foster Care - New Siblings
Our foster kids are settling in to their new environment! They are learning so much and are busy with playing, art projects, swimming, learning, and reading. It’s so good to give them a chance to just be kids. During this journey, I’ve been amazed at God’s perfect timing, provision and answered prayers.
If you want to follow our foster care journey and see pictures of the little guys, you are invited to join our private GroupMe.
Looking Parade Volunteers
Youth Challenge will have a float in Brush’s annual Fourth of July Parade. We will be using my husband’s military humvee to pull the float. I am looking for volunteers to help distribute tracts to the spectators the day of the parade. The choke point for parade tract distribution in the past has been the number of people passing them out. We handed out 2,600 tracts last year, but I think we can beat that record with more people. If you’re interested in helping, please contact me as soon as possible.

Prepare the Way Prepare the Way was the theme of Nationals 2025. Our opening speaker was a former quizzer who shared about verses he was memorizing that convicted him: “I didn’t like that verse, but I had to memorize it and review it.” These verses were a spotlight on areas in his life that he had not surrendered to God. By saying ‘yes’ to these spiritual pin-pricks, he became more like Jesus. “When you come to a verse you don’t like, surrender that area to Jesus.” Memorizing isn’t just for...
Bible Quiz Regionals Youth Challenge took three teams to the Midland regionals competition. Most of the quizzers on my team, Veritas, had never attended a post-season competition before. Everyone on Veritas answered, and several quizzed out! They also made memories with the other quizzers. The last night, the three Youth Challenge teams had the camp to themselves and enjoyed playing games together, including flashlight hide-and-seek. Final team standings: Witness placed 5th, Ginosko placed...
As the St. Patrick’s Day 5k race drew near, the forecast looked gloomy. Windy. Cold. Overcast. Maybe even raining. Youth Challenge was a sponsor for the 5k, and we were adding items to the runners’ goodie-bags. It even rained the day before the race. However, there were clear skies the morning of the 5k. There were approximately 75 runners, and each received a St. Patrick’s Day themed gospel tractas well as information about upcoming camps. One runner received our journaling Bible of the New...
